A New Lens for Missions: How the Perspectives Course Transformed My View of God's Global Purpose
When I first signed up for the Perspectives course, I had no idea how much it would challenge me, grow me, and ultimately change how I see God’s work in the world. I thought I already understood missions and what it meant to follow God’s call to “make disciples of all nations.” But Perspectives opened my eyes to the depth, beauty, and scope of God’s global purpose in ways I never imagined.
Perspectives isn’t just a class—it’s an invitation to see the world through God’s eyes. The course is built around four key areas: biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic perspectives. Each week, a new speaker or instructor brought these themes to life, showing how they intertwine to reveal God’s heart for the nations. As the lessons unfolded, I began to see how missions is not just an activity for a select few but a calling that weaves through the entirety of Scripture and touches every believer’s life.
One of the most impactful parts of the course was studying the biblical foundation of missions. I had read the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) countless times, but Perspectives showed me how the theme of God’s global redemption plan runs throughout the entire Bible. From the promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:3 (“...and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed”) to the worship of every tribe and tongue in Revelation 7:9, God’s heart for the nations is unmistakable. It’s not just about sending missionaries—it’s about God’s desire to be glorified among all peoples.
Another highlight was learning about the historical expansion of Christianity. I was captivated by the stories of how the gospel has spread across continents and cultures throughout history. From the early church’s boldness to the modern missionary movement, I saw how God has used ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things for His Kingdom. These stories were both humbling and inspiring. They reminded me that I am part of a much bigger story—one that began long before me and will continue long after.
The cultural perspective challenged me to think about missions in a new way. Growing up, I often thought of missions as going to a different country and sharing the gospel. While that’s a vital part of it, Perspectives taught me the importance of understanding and honoring the culture of the people you’re ministering to. I learned that the gospel doesn’t erase culture but transforms it, bringing the beauty of Christ into every context. This perspective reshaped how I think about reaching others, both globally and in my own community.
Finally, the strategic perspective brought it all together. I realized that missions isn’t random; it’s intentional. God has a strategy for reaching the nations, and we are invited to join Him in that work. Whether it’s through prayer, giving, going, or mobilizing others, we all have a role to play in God’s global purpose. Perspectives challenged me to think about how I can use my unique gifts, education, and opportunities to contribute to the Great Commission.
As I reflect on my journey through the Perspectives course, one truth stands out: God’s mission is so much bigger than me, yet He graciously invites me to be a part of it. This course didn’t just give me a better understanding of missions; it gave me a heart that beats in rhythm with God’s heart for the nations. It showed me that missions isn’t about crossing oceans; it’s about crossing barriers—whether they’re cultural, spiritual, or even personal fears.
If you’ve ever wondered about your role in God’s plan for the world, I can’t recommend the Perspectives course enough. It’s not just for missionaries; it’s for anyone who wants to see God’s glory displayed among all peoples. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or someone simply seeking to understand God’s purpose for your life, this course will transform the way you see missions—and the way you see God.
