Kitwe, Zambia 2023

In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to serve for three weeks in Kitwe, Zambia. This experience was life-changing in ways I never could have imagined. Partnering with Africa Freedom Mission and their ministry team, I worked alongside an amazing group of people to serve in local communities. We focused on street evangelism, caring for orphans, and supporting youth projects in schools. Every day was filled with challenges, growth, and moments of deep joy.

Arriving in Kitwe was humbling. After long flights and a bus journey, I stepped into an unfamiliar land, unsure of what to expect but eager to serve. Before the trip, I often felt unprepared and inadequate for such an important mission. However, God reminded me of Moses and how He equips those He calls. Through the challenges of fundraising and preparation, I saw God provide in ways that left me in awe. I realized He had been paving the way for this trip long before I even said, “Yes.”

The ministry work itself was both beautiful and heart-wrenching. Meeting children in the orphanage and hearing their stories reminded me of the brokenness in this world—but also of God’s deep love for each of us. Street evangelism was another highlight. It was incredible to share the message of Christ’s love with people who were hungry for hope. One day, despite feeling spiritually attacked and emotionally drained, I showed up for ministry anyway—and God showed up too. Conversations with college students and local believers reaffirmed how He works through our weakness to encourage and strengthen others.

Life in Kitwe was filled with lessons in community and humility. Living in a small, shared house with my team taught me what biblical fellowship looks like. We laughed, prayed, and worshiped together, forming bonds that felt more like family than mere friendships. Through our shared experiences, God showed me how to love and serve others more deeply.

One particular moment that stood out to me was a quiet morning when I felt called to read John 8—the story of the woman caught in adultery. The words “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on, sin no more” struck me to my core. I saw myself in both the woman and her accusers: burdened by shame yet quick to judge others. That morning, God humbled me and reminded me of His incredible grace. It was a turning point in my understanding of His love and forgiveness.

Kitwe became a second home for me. Whether it was dancing in the rain with children, navigating the markets, or singing praises in local churches, I saw God’s joy in every moment. Worship in Zambia was unlike anything I had ever experienced—unreserved, free, and full of life. It was during these times that I let go of my inhibitions and truly praised God with all my heart.

As I reflect on my time in Zambia, I am overwhelmed by how much God taught me. He refined me, healed me, and reminded me that ministry isn’t about perfection but about showing up and letting Him work through me. My identity has been reshaped—I now see myself as a bringer of light, called to carry the good news to the broken, just as Christ met me in my brokenness.

This trip was the beginning of something divine, and I am so grateful for every moment. Kitwe showed me the beauty of serving others and the deep joy of walking in obedience to God’s call. As I move forward, I carry the lessons, memories, and relationships from this mission with me, trusting that God will continue to use them for His glory.
