The In-Between: Living on Mission Right Where You Are
Mission trips are powerful—no doubt about it. They stretch us, teach us, and open our eyes to what God is doing in the world. But what happens when you’re back home, when the trip is over, and the buzz of mission work fades into the normal rhythm of life? How do you keep living on mission when you’re no longer hopping on buses or having life-changing conversations in new places?
The truth is that the mission doesn’t end when the trip does. God’s call to love people and make disciples doesn’t have an expiration date or a GPS pin. The in-between—those moments back home—are just as important. It’s where you can live intentionally, grow spiritually, and carry the lessons you learned into everyday life.
One thing that keeps me grounded during the in-between is staying rooted in God’s Word and prayer. On mission trips, I spend so much time asking God for guidance and strength, and honestly, I’m not sure how I’d make it through without that. Coming home doesn’t change that need. Dedicating time to the Bible and prayer keeps me connected to Him and reminds me that the same God who moved on the trip is still working here. It also keeps my heart for the people and places I served alive. Even though I’m not physically there anymore, prayer is a way I can continue to show up for them.
Another way to stay on mission is to share your experiences. Seriously, don’t keep those stories to yourself. Talk about what God did—both in the people you served and in your own heart. Whether it’s with your friends, family, or church, these stories can inspire others to step out in faith and get involved in missions. Plus, reflecting on those moments keeps the fire burning and reminds you why you said yes in the first place.
And don’t think that you need to leave the country to keep serving. There are endless ways to live on mission right in your own community. Volunteer at a local ministry, mentor someone, or just check in on your neighbors. The same Jesus you shared on the mission field is the one your coworker or classmate needs too. Living on mission is about showing up for the people right in front of you with love and compassion—whether it’s overseas or in your backyard.
One thing I’ve learned is how important intentional relationships are. Missions taught me how to deeply connect with people—listening to their stories, loving them where they’re at, and pointing them to Jesus. That doesn’t stop just because I’m back home. Whether it’s reconnecting with old friends or getting to know new ones, those relationships matter and can create opportunities to share the gospel in everyday ways.
The in-between is also the perfect time to prepare for what’s next. Pray about where God might be calling you next, and ask Him to work on your heart in the meantime. Maybe it’s fundraising, learning new skills, or even diving into a language. Whatever it looks like, use this time to equip yourself for whatever adventure God has for you.
It’s easy to feel like life at home is boring compared to the excitement of a mission trip. But I’ve learned that even the mundane moments can be sacred. Whether it’s holding the door for someone, offering a kind word, or just being present with the people around you, those little acts of love matter. God’s Kingdom is built in the small, faithful moments just as much as the big ones.
And don’t let the growth you experienced on the mission field fade. Keep pressing into discipleship, joining community groups, and finding ways to serve at your church. What you learned out there can fuel your faith journey here, helping you walk closer with Jesus every day.
The in-between isn’t a waiting room; it’s part of the mission. It’s a chance to surrender each moment to God and ask Him to use you wherever you are. Whether you’re across the globe or at home, the call is the same: love people, serve well, and share Jesus. So, what do we do in the in-between? We keep going. We keep showing up. Because the mission isn’t over—and neither is God’s faithfulness.
